Tungsten Copper, Explained: EDM, Switchgear & the Electrification Boom

Where you need copper's conductivity and tungsten's toughness in the same part, tungsten copper is the answer. A field guide to its applications as the world electrifies.

Most of our journal talks about tungsten carbide. This one is about a different material with a similar surname: tungsten copper, or WCu. It exists to solve a problem pure metals can't — being electrically and thermally conductive while surviving heat, arcing and mechanical load at the same time.

What WCu is

Tungsten copper is a composite — technically a pseudo-alloy, since the two don't truly alloy — of a tungsten skeleton infiltrated with copper. You get a blend of properties:

  • From tungsten: high melting point, hardness, low thermal expansion, arc-erosion resistance.
  • From copper: excellent electrical and thermal conductivity.

By varying the ratio — commonly expressed as tungsten content, e.g. W70 (70% tungsten) through W90 — you dial between more conductivity (more copper) and more strength and erosion resistance (more tungsten).

Where it earns its keep

  • EDM electrodes — WCu erodes far slower than pure copper in electrical discharge machining, holding fine detail and sharp corners over long burns.
  • Switchgear & high-voltage contacts — it survives repeated arcing without welding shut or eroding away, essential in circuit breakers and contactors.
  • Heat sinks & spreaders — its tunable thermal expansion can be matched to semiconductors, making it a reliable thermal base for power electronics.
  • Aerospace — mass-balancing weights and vibration damping, where density and machinability both matter.

Why it matters more in 2026

The through-line of this decade is electrification: grid build-out, renewable power, EVs and ever-denser power electronics. Every one of those trends multiplies demand for components that switch, carry or dissipate large electrical loads without degrading — exactly WCu's home turf. Switchgear for expanding grids, thermal management for power modules, and the EDM tooling that makes the dies behind it all: the electrified economy runs on materials like this.

When one part has to conduct like copper and endure like tungsten, WCu is usually the honest answer.
